Your Questions About How To Pick Stocks To Short

Mary asks…

Penny stock newsletter from Roundupthebulls.com?

Anyone familiar with them and know how to play them?
I joined roundupthebulls.com recently and they are making good picks but I am guess they are short term plays, am I right?

Please advise and let me know if you guys are familiar with sites such as this one and if its a good idea.

John answers:

Dealing with penny stocks is a little dangerous because they can move down as quickly as they move up, so you have to monitor them frequently.
I am not familiar with the site you mentioned but I just joined and will be happy to let you know how it goes.

Also, penny stocks should be your ‘spec’ plays and money that you CAN lose.

Laura asks…

I’m only in my late 20s; however, I’ve had a 403b/ 401k for a couple years now. I’ve watched it plummet.?

How would you diversify your investments using the options below if you planned to retire in 25 years? I’d consider myself somewhat of a risk taker, but not overly. What makes you qualified? I’ll pick best answer.

Put 40% in Freedom 2035- Fidelity’s goal funds usually perform pretty well and are well-managed depending on your goal retirement age. I’ve seen a lot of clients with JUST these goal funds do nicely, even recently.

Put about 20% in the OTC portfolio. This fund also out-performs the average for the category.

Put another 20% in the stock contrafund.

Finally, put 20% in something a little riskier, since you’ve still got a good chunk of time ahead of you. One of the Blue Chip Funds, or an international fund, for instance.

If you want to reduce your risk a bit, go ahead and switch either the OTC or the Contrafund to one of the bond funds. But at your age, you don’t really need to be in bonds yet.

I specialize in retirement- I audit benefit plans, set up benefit plans, help individuals plan, consult with businesses and their employees over their plans, and do 5500’s. Many of my clients use fidelity as their Trustee/administrator, so I track a lot of their funds, both while auditing and consulting.

Good luck. :0)

Nancy asks…

plz, help with this transcription from a video. Just two phrases?

Plz, (since English is not my first language) help me understand or correct what this very short video from this link: http://videos.howstuffworks.com/howstuffworks/450-how-choppers-work-video.htm says. So next it’s most of the text I understood and the asterisks ** as the conventions for the sentences/ words I couldn’t understand completely:

“The custom chopper motorcycle: It’s been immortalized on cable TV to the point of legend. But what does it really look like if you had one built?

The build process starts with a frame. ***The chop can have assemble it or use a stock frame***. Next, you pick the engine and transmission you want, along with the exhaust system. Then, there’s the stuff that affects the ride: the front fork, the wheels and the tires.

And then you customize the look: the gas tank, fenders, seat and the **handle** bars set the tone. Finally, there’s the paint. A great paint job ***can give out ____**** authentic vintage feel or transform it into a rolling work of art complete with paint striping and custom-air brushing. The only limits are your imagination and your wallet.”

Joseph asks…

Please read the start of my fantasy/romance book?

It’s called; Blood and Velvet and is written in blog form, i have only wrote the first blog so far. Please comment below on how I could improve it, thanks 🙂
P.S. some of it doesn’t make sense without the italics.
Blood and Velvet
OMG I am so pissed right now!
As you know I have been keeping this blog for like EVER and then I find out that the website decides to go down taking all my previous blog posts with it. I have been posting my whole life on here for years, like a diary, and now it’s all vanished into cyberspace air. Grrrrrrrrr!!!
Okay, deep breath, Sunny. There’s nothing you can do about it except send threatening hate e-mail to blogfast.com. And end up being banned all together, better just deal with the fact that my past three years of blogs has just been deleted.
Major grrr, if you ask me.
Anyway last night I went to ‘Blood and Velvet’, and yes, that’s a gothic bar. My best friend in the world, Charlotte, black mailed me in going with her, despite all my complaining. She practically threatened to post my year seven photograph which is enough to send anyone running for days. In the photo I have spots and braces not to mention my hair; tied back into a ponytail with a full fringe that has a gap in the middle, (Worst photo in the world). I no longer look like that, thank god. I have blonde wavy hair and pale skin with a few freckles over my nose, and my eyes are light green mixed with brown. I’m no longer wearing braces and my spots have completely gone. My hair is still wavy but I’ve learnt to deal with it.
Charlotte agreed to pick me up at my house at 7pm giving me time to find an almost gothic outfit to wear. I searched through my wardrobe finding only two items of clothing that is black; a dress and a tank top. I decide to go with the tank top, as Charlotte had told me to keep it simple, I accessorized it with a skirt just above my knees and some stilettos. I threw on some jewelry and brushed my hair vigorously before leaving the house. I didn’t look gothic but at least I wouldn’t standout like a shiny penny.
When Charlotte picked me up in her silver ford (not the most flashiest of cars), I hardly recognized her wearing a black miniskirt with a wonder woman top and a white mask of makeup and eyeliner on. She ran up and hugged me, she owes me big time).
“Wow, I’ve never seen you in so much black” she cries.
“Tell me about it, this club better be worth the effort” I replied and held up my fingers on the ‘effort’ using sarcasm. Then we entered the car and drove off.
When we arrived at Blood and Velvet it was surprisingly crowded and almost everyone was plastered in gothic makeup and black stockings. Rachel went to get a drink and I walked onto the dance floor. I allowed myself to be completely taken over by the music, might as well make the most of it, because I know for a fact that I won’t be coming here again. Rachel joined me with our drinks and hours passed by.
I walked outside to get some fresh air as the smoke machines inside was making the air almost unbreathable. I found a ‘comfortable’ looking bench, A.K.A one without chewing gum plastered all over it, and to my amazement, I was actually enjoying myself at the gothic bar.
“Good evening.”
I look up and my gaze falls on the most gorgeous pair of eyes I’ve ever seen in my sixteen years on the planet. They are literally the colour of sapphires. I mean, I’ve seen plenty of blue eyes in my day, but nothing like these. Better yet, the eyes are attached to a face equally amazing. I quickly take stock: smooth skin, high cheekbones, sooty black eyelashes, short blonde hair. He looks like a blue-eyed Orlando Bloom. Best of all, unlike the other Gothed-out club kids; he isn’t wearing a stitch of black. Just a simple tight white T-shirt and a pair of low-rise jeans. No eyeliner either, thank goodness. I scan the area, sure that “Orlando” must be speaking to someone other than me. Some supermodel to my right, perhaps. But I see no one in the general vicinity.

“Hey,” I reply, regretting it instantly; my voice sounds so squeaky that anyone could mix me up with Minnie mouse. Instead of replying, the guy reaches out and presses his palm against my cheek. His skin is cool, but his touch scorches my skin. His eyes study my face, then roam my body and I suddenly feel naked under his glare. I give an involuntary shiver and I can feel goose bumps popping up all over my arms. Wow. I can’t remember the last time a guy gave me actual goose bumps! Maybe never. I know I should be questioning why this random guy has approached me in a nightclub and evidently feels it’s no big deal to reach out and touch me so intimately, but I can’t find the words to voice any objections.

I can see his lips speaking but I cannot tell what he is saying over the loud music, he realizes and takes my hand, leading me further away from the bar, he-
Ah, mum’s screaming at me to go to sleep since it’s already 2am and i hav
BTW i missed a bit off the end because it doesn’t let me put it all on. 🙂

Sandy asks…

401k for the first time — have some questions?

I’ve never had a 401k before and I’m now eligible for it in my job. Tehy have a 5% match, so that’s what I’m going to contribute.

This job is something I’m not completly happy with and will very likely be leaving withing a year. In addition, I’ve never had mutual funds before either and I’m worried about the market going down the next couple years as I think this recession is no where near over.

Would I be better off contributing to a bond fund?
1. This gives me peace of mind in a troubled time
2. Would this be the smart bet considering the job is likely to be short term??? The potential loss in a bond fund is much less than in a stock based fund.

Finally, if I pick the bond fund and decide to stay with the company — can I change my 401k to from the bond fund to a stock based fund??? and after how long?
Is their typically a fee for that ?

Thanks for your help
It looks like too that I can diversify within my plan.

I can contribute 100% of my contribution to a single fund, 50/50 to two different fund, 33/33/33 to 3 different funds. The choices are endless.

Would it be wise to put 50% in a stock fund and 50% in a balanced fund?

John answers:

If you expect to leave within 3 years, here is a simple option:

Find the money market fund (sometimes called stable value or cash or income fund). They are NOT a bond fund. They frequently have a very low interest rate (2%-3% these days) and often have a stable price (like $1 per share). The first link below is the Vanguard Money Market Fund (called PRIME) which is one of the best in existence for you to compare the funds in your plan to.

Put all of your contributions and match money in this option. (This assures you will not loose money while you wait to leave).

When you leave, the plan will send you separation documents. Contact Vanguard.com with the information and arrange for a direct transfer of all funds to a Vanguard Rolloever IRA. Invest all of this money in the Vanguard Target Retirement fund for the year closest to the year you will turn 68. (second link)
